Makerspace Open Hours

  • Jesup Memorial Library 34 Mount Desert Street Bar Harbor, Maine 04609 (map)

The Makerspace is open for YOU! Bring in your crafts, ideas, and/or curiosity and create with us. Stay for 15 minutes to finish those last two rows of crochet or stay for the whole time to start a project from scratch. The time and space is yours. Read on for rules and information.

How Can It Be Used?

The Makerspace is currently a staff-facilitated service. You can sign up for programs here on the website. Each month we’ll offer at least one adult and one youth program. Not interested in any of those? We're offering open hours on the first Saturday of the month from 1pm-4pm.

Open Studio

The first Saturday of each month we hold open hours for the Makerspace from 1pm to 4pm. This is a space for the community, so we want you to actually be able to use it! To keep it open, though, we ask that you follow the rules and notes for the open studio:

  • Must be in 5th grade or higher. We have equipment and machines that are unsafe for unsupervised children. If you or your kiddo is less than 10, check out our programs for the month - we might have something for them.

  • Respect the space. Clean up after yourself and return supplies to where you found them.

  • Be kind to others using the space. This means sharing supplies, being generally polite and courteous, and not touching works-in-progress that aren't yours.

  • Headphones/earbuds are okay. Please still be aware of your surroundings and those around you.

  • Don't leave machines on. If you're done using it, turn it off and clean up any debris.

  • The 3D printers are not free-to-use and are currently reserved only for staff-facilitated programs.

  • Please take home whatever you make! We don't have space to store works-in-progress. We would hate it if anything bad happened to your hard work.

What Can I Do in the Open Studio?

So many things! Keeping in mind time and ventilation, of course. We have a lot of materials so you don't have to bring anything in if you don't want to. If you're unsure if we have something, you can always ask our Makerspace Assistant (syanevskyy@jesuplibrary.org). Here are some examples of what you can do:

  • Bring in a work-in-progress from home and finish it up

  • Ask for help on where to start with a project or idea

  • Show up with no plan and use whatever materials we have

  • Use the Chompsaw to make cardboard creations

  • Be there to support a friend

  • Socialize with your neighbors while doodling

  • Simply check out the space and its vibe

Don't let those limit you! The Makerspace is for the community, so we always want to see what you want the space to be. Don't be afraid to ask questions. We hope to see you around!
