Construction Update: Masonry, Drywall, and Paint - Oh My!

Outside of the new addition, masonry is being installed!

Inside, rooms are being furnished with electrical wiring, with drywall and paint in some of the finished spaces.

Baker & Taylor Closure: What It Means for Our Patrons

Like many other libraries, the Jesup purchases the majority of our books from Baker & Taylor, the largest library wholesale company in the country. Earlier this month, Baker & Taylor abruptly announced plans to cease operations. We are quickly converting orders to new distributors to minimize the disruption, though it remains uncertain when we will be able to expect regular deliveries. Patrons may notice some delays in our New Books selections, and if we are unable to find similar discounts as had been offered by Baker & Taylor, we may have to reduce the number of books we can purchase this year. In the meantime, we encourage you to use InterLibrary Loan (ILL) to request anything we might be missing. Please feel free to ask staff for help with Minerva & MaineCat services. We have access to books and resources from over 60 libraries around the state and can procure almost any title you are looking for within 1-2 weeks!

Did you know?

The Jesup Memorial Library spends nearly $50,000 per year purchasing new books, ebooks, audiobooks, periodicals, and other media, including replacement copies for books that are lost or damaged. This money comes equally from three sources: municipal funding from the Town of Bar Harbor, the Jesup’s financial reserves, and donations from patrons like you through our Annual Campaign. If you would like to contribute to our book fund, please make a contribution or contact Lila Miller at lmiller@jesuplibrary.org. MaineCF Scholarships: MDI and Beyond

Join Siana Emery for a presentation outlining the hundreds of scholarship programs offered through the Maine Community Foundation, supporting everything from summer camp to graduate school. We will review what scholarships are available, how to navigate our website and application portal, and some tips and tricks for preparing a scholarship application.

Community Seeds

Thursday, November 13th

3:00 to 5:00pm

The Community Seeds Library and Network will host an educational session with seed swapping, artwork, and stories. Learn about seeds, stories, political ecologies and art on seeds. Bring seeds to share and get involved in the creation of a new seed library for the community.

Author Talk with Carol Woolman: Ecology of Grief

Thursday, November 13th

6:30 to 7:30pm

Carol Woolman will present an author talk on Ecology of Grief, a poignant memoir about the loss of her youngest son, Mark. It includes the devastating and sudden loss of a young adult, but also adventure, mystery, and meaning that bring comfort and connection. It is a book that can companion a grief-stricken parent and those who work with them with compassion and understanding.

Recurring Programs

Bar Harbor Scrabble Club

Connect with fellow word-lovers: all skill levels are welcome! Players are encouraged to bring their own boards, and some boards will also be provided. Scrabble Club meets on second and fourth Saturdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Write On! Writing Group

Join the Write On! Writing Group for support in your craft. The Write On! writers meet Saturday mornings at 9:00 a.m. on Zoom. For more information, please contact the library at info@jesuplibrary.org.

Jesup Knitters' Guild

Fiber artists of all skill levels are welcome to drop in and enjoy crafting and conversation with the Jesup Knitters' Guild, Thursday evenings at 5:00pm!

Upcoming Youth Programs

Train for Trick-Or-Treat!

Friday, October 31st

1:00 - 3:00pm

Get ready to trick-or-treat at the library with fun outdoor activities including corn hole, ring toss, and a scavenger hunt! Kids in grade 3 and up can be at the library on their own with parent permission. Kids in grade 2 and under, please bring an adult!

The Jesup, Northeast Harbor, and Ellsworth Public Libraries are teaming up with Volta to bring you a monthly Storytime N Climb from September through November. Each month, an awesome local librarian will lead storytime at the gym. Jesup Librarians will lead Storytime on Saturday, November 8th. Storytime N’ Climb will take place at Volta on Saturdays, 10am-12pm. Storytime is free, and non-members may pay to climb post-Storytime ($10, all rentals included).

Recurring Youth Programs

Story and Play
Children ages 5 and under and their caregivers are invited to join Abby on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 - 11:15 am for stories, songs, and playtime afterward to connect with other kids and parents.
